right now on fox50, a campbell university student dies after a fall on campus. we are live with what we are learning about the developing story and how the university is responding. >> a tragic turn in wake county, what investigators have told us about what happened. by a local high school football game will have extra security. thanks for joining us this friday morning, tgif, i'm lena tilett. >> good morning, everybody, i'm bill leslie. got a little rain earlier this morning, i think it's about gone.
as yesterday. >> it is not. this is the perfect kind of rain where it happens overnight, moves on in and we have a bright, sunny day. i don't know, there is something about taking a nap in the middle of the afternoon while it is raining. let's take a look at what's going on temperature wise. most of the rain slipping to the south and east, still in the southern part of the viewing area but by 8:00 most of it will be gone. typically when we have ra accidents. that is not the case, at least caused by rain. 60 in durham, 60 in holly springs, brian is coming up in a few minutes to talk about where the roads are wet. 63 in goldsboro and in southern pines. these temperatures are extremely warm. we see them drop over the next couple of hours then warming back up to the mid-60s.
sunshine and a breezy afternoon with a high of 67. it's going to be cool over the weekend, i'll show you how cool, but first, brian is here with a look at what roads. other spots are starting to dry out, just seeing damp conditions. let's start out at garner and look at a 70 business and timber drive. over in durham, looks like they are clearing up very nicely but some of us are seng east of the triangle along the i-95 corridor through rocky mount, wilson, smithfield, selma, benson, dunn and into fayetteville this morning. also, i-40 will be a wet ride heading toward benson and beyond in the sampson county. slow down and give yourself extra time. if we zoom into the live commute map, we have a report of a minor crash from rock quarry road, also on glenwood
from 54, but over all major routes looking good. slow on westbound near the clayton bypass but nothing unusual this morning. back to you. to a developing story out of harnett county where a college freshman has died after falling from a dorm window. >> it happened last night at campbell university. that's where wral's mikaya thurmond is reporting from this morning. what can you tell us about this tragic story? >> reporter: the right now is determining whether that student jumped, fell, or was pushed out of a third story window of a dorm that is just behind me here at campbell university. authorities have identified that student as 18-year-old ezra goldbach who died from that fall. he was a professional golf management major and freshman at campbell. around 10 p.m., investigators with the harnett county sheriff's office began blocking
the three-story building is an all boys dorm. the victim's family has been notified. the vice president of student affairs here at campbell university says that they are traumatized by the tragedy and saddened, they will have counselors here for students and faculty members and will continue to have counselors through next week. bill and lena? >> mikaya thurmond, thank you. authorities in are investigating after a car struck and killed an old girl. it happened on old us-1. the girl was crossing the street when she was struck before 5:30 yesterday evening. the girl was just 3 years old and the father had just purchased toys for his daughter and two other children in the family. the friend says he was setting up a game that he bought and did not notice the girl was behind him in the yard when she
no word on charges. clayton police are responding to a call about a man beaten ended up arresting that man and two others. deputies found a man beaten up at a gas station unfamiliar church road. he was carrying drugs including ecstasy. further investigation resulted in the arrest of samuel garcia and samantha weiss heimer, also on drug charges. extra security will be on hand for tonight's game in pinecrest high school in moore county. >> wral's renee chou newsroom with more. >> reporter: the moore county school system sent an email saying students, parents and faculty will need to go through standup metal detectors. also no bags will be allowed in the stadium area. officials do not have any specific threats, they just want to make sure everyone is safe in light of recent violence. that includes the drive-by shooting of a 12-year-old girl in southern pines. thanks linda campbell was shot one week ago today.
a man was charged as an accessory after the fact. police are looking for a gunman in a second drive-by shooting. a man was shot in the leg in a yard on west illinois street where several people were gathered for a cookout. that and then -- that man is supposed to be okay. there is a memorial service tomorrow for jalinda campbell at west primary school dose -- west york school on primary in the field with candidates and campaigns as they learn the outcomes of the races. we will have the fastest election returns of anyone in the area. >> our coverage on wral begins at 7:00 and will continue well into the night. it includes a special one-hour edition of our 11:00 news. david crabtree will be with laura leslie on three hours of election coverage focused on

it being cool. it is: south hill, roanoke, 60 around the triangle, 60 in sanford, 64 in fayetteville and clinton. that's where temperatures will be for the rest of the afternoon. here's our cold front, showers ahead of it, those showers move around and out to be replaced by cooler temperatures this afternoon. you can see that as we move through the morning. it zips out quickly, skies clearing, lots of sunshine for today and through the weekend. this morning is our next of rain for the next seven days. a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch is what folks saw out of that. saturday and sunday look beautiful. it's going to be cool but closer to normal. 67 degrees, it is a football friday. a lot of folks will be headed out this evening. if you're heading out to a football game, 60 degrees. unc and duke play. 12:30, 60 degrees. midafternoon, 66.
election day and it looks nice. it'll be cool but dry. polls open at 6:30, to about 40 degrees, that's going to feel pretty nippy. polls close at 7:30 to a temperature close to 60 degrees. will see a high close to 70 degrees. a pretty nice looking fall forecast. back to dry conditions for the next of the hour and that i'll be at. >> let's check in on i-40. we saw wet roads on that side of town a little while ago on the south side of durham but roads are starting to dry out on the western side of the triangle. indeed we are not seeing any problems with wet conditions in the triangle area proper. heading south and east is where you could be a problem with wet roads. not talking about standing water, not raining quite that hard this morning but slow down on 95 and i-40 south of
showers leaving behind wet conditions in parts of moore county and chatham county as well. let's get an update on your life commutes, a few crashes here and there including one reported on capital boulevard and highwood boulevard north of 440. another accident came in on lake wheeler road and simkins road. no delays showing up on the sensors. we are picking up backups on the bypass, 60 minutes from 42 to 440. yo raleigh to rtp. heads up about a big ramp closure taking place starting tonight at 9:00. this is part of the fortify project. the on and off ramps at rock quarry road will be closed tonight until the morning of november 14. that is a monday morning so it will be reopened for the money -- morning commute. there will be assigned each were in place.
trial of a white former police officer accused of killing a black man in april. michael slater is accused of shooting walter scott eight times after he fled a traffic stop. the shooting was captured by a bystander undramatic cell phone video. some of scott's cell phone -- family members took the stand including his son and fiance. slager faces between 30 years and life in prison if convicted. charged in the deathof a suspect is off the job. a superior court judge ordered the state to revoke the law enforcement certification of the man until the case is resolved. he is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of alexander thompson. thompson died after a march chase that spanned two counties. he was shot with a stun gun and died a month later. the grandson of a prominent duke university daughter is --
jeffrey yoh jr. faces rape as well as assault by strangulation charges. according to documents obtained by wral, the assaults took place last year at an on- campus apartment. the yoh name is a well-known one on campus , spike yoh was a donor, longer enrolled. he is currently on a $500,000 bond and is due in court next week. his defense attorney tells us yoh like anyone else should be presumed innocent. a reward is offered after a series of threats targeting wilson county schools. superintendent lane neil sent a letter to parents asking for help in identifying the people responsible. the person linked to the threat monday is being disciplined. other threats were made recently including two wednesday.
bedingfield high school. hunt received funds -- bomb threats twice. anyone with information should call police. the city of raleigh reversed its course in a recent zoning decision over the antiabortion group hand of hope residents -- pregnancy resource center. they wanted to restore a home next to an abortion clinic so that it could move its office into that space. the city refused and the group filed a federal lawsuit. administrator decided the office can move. there is still a 30 day window for nearby property owners to appeal before the decision becomes final. north carolina health officials reported a new flu related death in the state that brings the total number of deaths from complications of the flu this season to two. the cdc reports sporadic flu activity in our case -- state

afternoon, just on the cool side. you can see once the front slips offshore we are done with the rain. that's probably the last rain we will see for the next seven days. we had dry conditions lately. initially after matthew came through it was nice to have the dry conditions so the rivers could come back down. we are not in any drought situation but it is kind of dry out there. cooler weather will be what we are experiencing for the weekend and beyond. through much of october. we will settle down to normal temperatures now at least for the next seven or eight days. 11:00, lots of sunshine, expect it to feel pretty crisp out. we will have a cool breeze coming from the north and breezy into the day tomorrow as well. a gorgeous weekend. temperatures will climb back to nearly 70 degrees after cool temperatures today and tomorrow but sunday, we are back to 70 degrees. 67 today, holding in the 60s.
